About Us
Stour Carp is owned and run by Tom Harris and Tony Campbell.
We specialise in growing stunning Mirror & Common Carp.
Our Lakes are located on Tom’s Family’s Farm as a diversification project. Tom takes care of the day to day running of the lakes. With Fisheries owner and well-regarded fish expert Tony Campbell bringing his wealth of knowledge and experience to enable us to grow and breed the best fish.
Our Lakes & Fish
Our farm is located in the valley of the River Stour, Dorset. We benefit from incredibly clean water that comes from our own springs in the hillsides that flows though our lakes before joining a tributary of the River Stour.
Our farm is made up of 5 lakes, Lake one being the largest at 3 acres and Lake 5 our smallest netted nursery pond. We have been quietly growing our stock over the last 5 years from fry and have hand selected 1-2lb fish to grow onto the larger sizes, this has given us a very diverse and aesthetically pleasing batch of fish! Our fish are not only good lookers they grow well too! Attaining growth rates of 3-5lb a year is common and in the right environment this could be double. They love our big gravel pits and thrive on the naturals and large open spaces; they will darken off in colour in clearer waters to give the classic Tony Campbell looking carp. Check out Farlows and Swarkestone lakes to see these examples of previously stocked fish.
Our Practices and Values
We are very proud of the fish we produce. Striving for quality over quantity; we are not an intensive farm. We pay close attention to stocking numbers and weight to make sure we are not overstocking. Actively encouraging nature and other wildlife around and in our lakes so the fish still have access to the natural food sources.
We have heavily invested in designing and producing our own feeding systems, designed and built by Tom Harris, meaning our large stock have food broadcast across two large feeding areas 5 times. This reduces competition and means our fish are constantly able to graze but also have to actively hunt for the food maintaining that natural instinct. All this means our fish achieve a healthy growth and fantastic body shape.
Bio Security: The healthiest and happiest of fish!
Being at the head of the River Stour with no fish held above our site enables us to operate strict biosecurity measures and provide the cleanest fish possible to our customers.
All fish are bred and reared by Tony Campbell, so we have total control of movements to and from site, therefore giving us the upmost confidence that our fish are clean and free from KHV, CEV and SVC.
We are a CEFAS registered site and work closely with both the Fisheries health inspectorate (CEFAS) and the Environment Agency.
Rest assured you can buy with confidence.
How to buy our Fish
We strive for quality over quantity, this means we only look to sell 100-150 carp, 13lb-20lb per season. Once a year (normally a weekend between Dec & Feb) we drain our main lake. We then grade out the fish that meet our standards for sale. Due to this way of working we do not know exactly what will be available until we net, although we do keep an eye on them so do have some idea. We work on a ‘first come first served’ basis. If you register an interest in our stock, you'll be added to our sales list and we will contact you by phone once we know what we have available. We keep our customers in the loop as to when we intend to drain and actively encourage you to attend our netting day and hand select your own fish, for this reason first choice is given to those on site on the day. We prefer you to collect on the day, but we can hold them in tanks for short periods, and are also able to deliver. Hand selected carp are subject to a 20% surcharge.
Once we have netted our main lake we drain down some of our other lakes to re-grade and re stock our main lake. Sometimes at this point we will have smaller fish (anywhere between 1lb-10lb) that we are unable to keep due to our stocking levels. If this is a size you are interested in, then please do register an interest.
